Overview
Dadaocheng is Taipei's oldest and most historically significant commercial district, where ornate Baroque-style shophouses line streets that have served as Taiwan's trading hub since the 1850s.
Highlights
- Dihua Street: The district's main artery, lined with beautifully restored two- and three-story shophouses selling traditional goods, dried goods, and artisan crafts.
- Tea Merchants: Historic tea houses where you can sample the oolong teas that first brought wealth to this district in the 19th century.
- Xiahai City God Temple: A small but incredibly active temple where locals pray for love — said to have facilitated over 60,000 marriages.
History
Dadaocheng rose to prominence in the 1860s as a major tea export hub, making it one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in late-Qing Taiwan. Its Baroque-influenced architecture reflects the cosmopolitan trading culture of that era.
