Bangkok National Museum of Royal Barges

Overview

This museum on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya River houses Thailand's magnificent fleet of ceremonial royal barges. The ornately carved and gilded vessels are used in the Royal Barge Procession, a grand river ceremony dating back centuries.

Highlights

• Suphannahong: The king's personal barge, a 46-metre vessel carved from a single trunk of teak, featuring a gilded swan prow.
• Anantanakharat: A multi-headed naga barge used by the queen.

History

The Royal Barge Procession tradition dates to the Ayutthaya Kingdom (14th century). The current fleet was mostly rebuilt after damage in World War II bombing raids.
