Overview
Khao San Road is Bangkok's legendary backpacker strip — a 410-metre lane in the Banglamphu neighborhood packed with guesthouses, bars, street food vendors, T-shirt shops, and massage parlours. It is one of Asia's most iconic streets.
Highlights
- Street Food: Pad thai, mango sticky rice, scorpion skewers, and fresh fruit shakes line both sides of the road.
- Nightlife: Bars with cheap buckets, live music, and open-air DJs keep the street buzzing until late.
- People-Watching: The parade of travelers, street performers, and tuk-tuk touts is an experience in itself.
History
Named after a type of rice once sold here, Khao San was a quiet residential street until the 1980s backpacker boom. It gained fame through its mention in Alex Garland's 1996 novel The Beach and the subsequent Leonardo DiCaprio film.
Visitor Tips
- Evening visit: The street comes alive after 20:00; daytime is quieter and less interesting.
- Watch your belongings: Pickpockets occasionally operate in the crowds.
- Duration: 1–2 hours.
