National Palace (Istana Negara)

Overview

Istana Negara is the official residence of Malaysia's Yang di-Pertuan Agong (constitutional monarch). The current palace, completed in 2011 at a cost of RM800 million, sits on a sprawling hilltop site along Jalan Duta with an ornate golden-domed gateway.

Highlights

• Main gate: The grand entrance with its gilded dome and a pair of royal guards on horseback.
• Guard change ceremony: Sentries in ceremonial uniform perform a modest changing of the guard.
• Royal flag: When the golden-yellow Seri Paduka flag flies, the King is in residence.

History

The original Istana Negara (now the Royal Museum) was the residence from 1957 to 2011. The present palace was built to accommodate Malaysia's unique rotating monarchy, where a new king is elected every five years.

• Exterior only: Visitors cannot enter the palace grounds; photographs from the gate.
