Overview
Xochimilco's Floating Gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remnants of the Aztec-era chinampa agricultural system where crops were grown on artificial islands in shallow lake waters.
Highlights
- Trajinera rides: Hire a painted flat-bottom boat and float through flower-lined canals with onboard food and mariachi bands.
- Chinampa farms: Some islands still produce vegetables, flowers, and the endangered axolotl salamander.
- Island of the Dolls: A creepy but fascinating island hung with hundreds of dolls.
History
The chinampas date to the Aztec period (14th-16th centuries) and were the agricultural backbone of Tenochtitlán. UNESCO designated them in 1987.
Visitor Tips
- Weekday visits: Weekends are crowded and noisy; weekdays offer a calmer experience.
