Overview
Teotihuacán is an ancient Mesoamerican city 50 km northeast of Mexico City, home to two massive pyramids and the ceremonial Avenue of the Dead. At its peak around 450 CE, it was one of the largest cities in the world.
Highlights
- Pyramid of the Sun: The third-largest pyramid in the world at 65 metres; climb the 248 steps for valley views.
- Pyramid of the Moon: Smaller but architecturally refined, framing the Avenue of the Dead.
- Temple of the Feathered Serpent: Elaborately carved facades with Quetzalcoatl and Tlaloc heads.
History
Built between 100 BCE and 250 CE by an unknown civilisation, Teotihuacán was already in ruins when the Aztecs discovered it.
