Saadian Tombs

Overview

The Saadian Tombs are a 16th-century royal necropolis sealed and forgotten for over 200 years until rediscovery via aerial survey in 1917. The mausolea contain 66 tombs including Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour.

Highlights

• Hall of Twelve Columns: Italian Carrara marble colonnade, carved cedar dome, and zellij mosaic walls.
• Garden of tombs: Elaborately carved headstones amid roses and lemon trees.
• Carved stucco: Some of the finest surviving Saadian stuccowork.

History

Built by Ahmed al-Mansour around 1578, walled off by Alaouite Sultan Moulay Ismail in the late 17th century. French archaeologists opened a passage in 1917.

• Visit early: The narrow entrance creates long queues by mid-morning.
• Entrance fee: 70 MAD (~€7).
• Duration: 30–45 minutes.
