Bab Agnaou

Overview

Bab Agnaou is the most ornate of the 19 gates piercing Marrakesh's 12th-century walls. This stone gateway features concentric horseshoe arches and Kufic inscriptions marking the ceremonial entrance to the Kasbah.

History

Built during the Almohad period (late 12th century), one of only two stone-built gates in the medina walls. Its name may derive from Berber for "hornless ram."

• Free and always open: A quick stop between Jemaa el-Fnaa and the Saadian Tombs.
• Best light: Afternoon sun illuminates the carved detail.
