Overview
Whale watching from Reykjavík's Old Harbour offers the chance to see minke whales, humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbour porpoises in Faxaflói Bay—all within sight of the city skyline and Mount Esja.
Highlights
- Minke Whales: The most commonly sighted species, often surfacing within metres of the boat.
- Humpback Whales: Increasingly common in Faxaflói, known for dramatic breaches and tail slaps.
- Puffin Season: From May to mid-August, tours often pass puffin nesting colonies on Akurey and Lundey islands.
History
Whale watching in Iceland began in 1991 in Húsavík, north Iceland. Reykjavík operators launched in the early 2000s, and the industry has grown into one of the country's top tourism activities, with sighting success rates above 90% in summer.
Visitor Tips
- Duration: 3–3.5 hours.
- Season: April to October for best sightings; summer has the highest success rate.
- Dress Warm: Bring layers; boats provide overalls but conditions on the bay can be rough.
