Overview
Tjörnin is a serene city-centre lake bordered by walkways, green lawns, and some of Reykjavík's most beautiful houses. Home to over 40 bird species, it offers a peaceful oasis minutes from the bustle of Laugavegur.
Highlights
- Birdlife: Arctic terns, eider ducks, greylag geese, and whooper swans populate the lake year-round.
- City Hall Views: The modernist Reykjavík City Hall sits partly over the lake's northern shore.
- Winter Ice: In cold winters the lake freezes and locals ice-skate on it—a beloved Reykjavík tradition.
History
Tjörnin has been at the heart of Reykjavík since the city's founding. Its shores were among the first settled areas, and it has long served as a gathering place for residents. The lake is fed by natural springs and a small stream.
Visitor Tips
- Duration: 20–30 minutes for a lap around the lake.
- Feeding the Birds: Bread can harm the birds; seeds or grain are better options.
