Kjarvalsstaðir is dedicated to the work of Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval (1885–1972), one of Iceland's most beloved painters. Set in Klambratún park, the museum pairs Kjarval's dreamlike landscapes with temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
Kjarval grew up in poverty and worked as a fisherman before studying art in Copenhagen and London. His unique style blended European modernism with an intensely personal vision of Iceland's landscapes. The museum, designed by Hannes Kr. Davíðsson, opened in 1973.
