Overview
The outdoor observation deck at Perlan sits atop Öskjuhlíð hill, offering free panoramic views across Reykjavík, the harbour, Mount Esja, and the surrounding lava fields. Unlike the museum inside, access to the deck is complimentary.
Highlights
- City Vista: An elevated, unobstructed vantage point above the treeline covering the full urban spread.
- Mountain Views: On clear days, see the Snæfellsjökull ice cap 120 km to the northwest.
- Woodland Setting: The hill is covered in one of Iceland's few mature woodland areas, planted in the 1950s.
History
Perlan was built in 1991 atop six massive hot-water storage tanks that supply Reykjavík's geothermal district heating. The viewing deck was designed as a public amenity from the outset.
