Laugardalur (Hot Spring Valley) is Reykjavík's largest park and recreational area, named for the geothermal springs once used for laundry. Today it encompasses a botanical garden, a zoo, sports facilities, and one of the city's best swimming pools.
The valley has been associated with hot springs for centuries—19th-century washerwomen used the natural hot water for laundry, giving nearby Laugavegur street its name. The area was developed into a public park in the 20th century.
