Overview
Imagine Peace Tower is a luminous art installation on Viðey island by Yoko Ono, dedicated to John Lennon. Each autumn, a powerful beam of light is projected skyward from a white stone wishing well, visible across Reykjavík.
Highlights
- Light Beam: Between 9 October (Lennon's birthday) and 8 December (anniversary of his death), the column of light stretches up to 4 km into the sky.
- Wishing Well: The base is inscribed with "Imagine Peace" in 24 languages, and contains over a million wishes submitted by people worldwide.
- Island Setting: Viðey island offers additional attractions including historic ruins, walking trails, and Richard Serra sculptures.
History
Yoko Ono unveiled the installation on 9 October 2007, choosing Iceland for its use of geothermal energy, which powers the light. The project was inspired by Lennon's "Imagine" and Yoko Ono's long commitment to peace activism.
