Overview
The Howth Cliff Walk is one of Dublin's most spectacular outdoor experiences — a dramatic coastal trail around Howth Head peninsula, offering sweeping views of Dublin Bay, Ireland's Eye island, and on clear days, the Mourne Mountains.
Highlights
- Cliff Scenery: Rugged cliffs dropping into the Irish Sea, with heather, gorse, and wildflowers in season.
- Ireland's Eye: Views of the uninhabited island just offshore, home to a ruined 8th-century church and vast seabird colonies.
- Baily Lighthouse: The trail passes above the iconic 1814 lighthouse perched at the edge of the peninsula.
History
Howth has been a fishing village since Norse times. The cliff path follows ancient routes used by fishermen and coast guards. The area is a Special Area of Conservation for its maritime habitats.
