The Four Courts is one of Dublin's most prominent landmarks, an imposing neoclassical building on the north bank of the Liffey that has served as the seat of Ireland's superior courts since 1796.
Designed by James Gandon and completed in 1802, the building was severely damaged during the Irish Civil War in 1922 when anti-Treaty forces occupied it. Centuries of irreplaceable legal and historical records were destroyed in the resulting fire.
