Overview
Dublin's Docklands have been transformed from derelict dockyards into a vibrant modern quarter, home to the European headquarters of Google, Meta, and other tech giants alongside contemporary architecture, waterfront dining, and cultural venues.
Highlights
- Grand Canal Square: Designed by Martha Schwartz, a striking red-carpeted public plaza in front of the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.
- Convention Centre Dublin: A distinctive tilted-glass cylinder on the north quays designed by Kevin Roche.
- Waterfront Walks: The Grand Canal Dock and Royal Canal offer pleasant walking routes with views of contemporary architecture.
History
Once the busiest port in Ireland, the docklands declined from the 1960s. The Dublin Docklands Development Authority, established in 1997, oversaw a €7 billion regeneration that transformed 520 acres of brownfield land.
