Overview
Taronga Zoo covers 28 hectares on the harbour foreshore at Mosman, housing over 4,000 animals from 350 species. Its hilltop position provides some of the best skyline views in Sydney — visible from almost every enclosure.
Highlights
- Sky Safari: A cable car ride from the wharf to the hilltop entrance with sweeping harbour views.
- Free-flight bird show: Daily open-air shows with native Australian birds against the Opera House backdrop.
- Australian Walkabout: Walk among free-roaming kangaroos and wallabies.
History
Opened in 1916, Taronga (an Aboriginal word meaning "water view") moved its collection from Moore Park by ferry. The zoo is now a leader in conservation breeding programs for platypus, bilbies, and Tasmanian devils.
Visitor Tips
- Ferry access: The 12-minute ferry from Circular Quay is the best approach — Sky Safari is included in entry.
- Arrive early: Gates open at 9:30; the first hour is when animals are most active.
- Duration: 3–4 hours.
