Opened on 19 March 1932, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the world's largest (though not longest) steel arch bridge. Its 503-metre span connects the CBD to the North Shore, carrying eight road lanes, two rail lines, a footway, and a cycleway.
Designed by John Bradfield and built by Dorman Long of Middlesbrough, England, the bridge took eight years to build and employed 1,400 workers. It was famously opened by Captain Francis de Groot, who slashed the ribbon with a sword before the Premier could cut it.
