Overview

Yoshikien is a beautiful three-part Japanese garden offering a tranquil escape adjacent to Isuien. Unusually, it is completely free for international visitors, making it one of the best-value cultural experiences in Nara.

History

The garden was formerly part of the grounds of an important priest's residence associated with Kasuga Shrine. It was opened to the public and maintained by the city of Nara, with the free admission policy for foreign visitors introduced to promote cultural exchange.

• Best Seasons: The moss garden is most vivid after summer rains; the pond garden peaks during autumn leaf season.
