Overview
Ukimido is an elegant hexagonal floating pavilion set on Sagi Pond in the southern section of Nara Park. Connected to shore by a graceful arched bridge, it creates one of Nara's most photographed scenes, particularly when illuminated at night.
Highlights
- Floating Pavilion: The hexagonal pavilion appears to float on the pond's surface, its reflection creating a perfect symmetrical image in calm water.
- Night Illumination: The pavilion is lit up after dark, and the reflection in the pond creates a particularly magical and romantic atmosphere.
- Seasonal Beauty: Surrounded by cherry blossoms in spring and vivid maples in autumn, the pavilion serves as a focal point for Nara's seasonal beauty.
History
Originally built in the Heian period as a memorial hall, the current pavilion is a reconstruction that faithfully preserves the traditional hexagonal design. It has served as a meditation point and scenic landmark for centuries.
Visitor Tips
- Free Access: The pavilion and surrounding pond area are freely accessible at all times, including at night when the illumination is most beautiful.
- Photography: For the best reflection shots, visit on a windless evening when the pond surface is perfectly still.
- Duration: 10–15 minutes.
