Overview
Nigatsu-do (Second Month Hall) is a sub-temple of Todai-ji perched on the hillside east of the Great Buddha Hall. Its elevated balcony offers one of the finest free panoramic views in Nara, sweeping across the city rooftops to the western mountains.
Highlights
- Panoramic Balcony: The temple's open balcony provides a stunning, unobstructed westward view over Nara — especially spectacular at sunset when the sky glows behind the distant mountains.
- Omizutori Ceremony: The famous Water-Drawing Ceremony (Shuni-e), held each March since 752 AD, features monks running along the balcony with giant flaming torches, showering sparks on the crowds below.
- Atmospheric Approach: The stone stairway leading up through ancient tree roots and moss-covered walls is one of the most photogenic paths in Nara.
History
Founded in 752, the same year as the Great Buddha's eye-opening ceremony. The Omizutori ceremony has been performed here without interruption for over 1,270 years — even during wars, famines, and earthquakes — making it one of the longest continuously observed rituals in the world.
Visitor Tips
- Sunset Visit: Time your visit for late afternoon to catch the golden hour from the balcony — bring a camera.
- Omizutori: If visiting in early-to-mid March, the fire ceremony is an unforgettable experience but very crowded. Arrive hours early for a good viewing spot.
- Duration: 20–30 minutes.
