Overview
One of Kyoto's most important Zen temples, ranked at the top of the Five Mountain system. Its massive gate and atmospheric brick aqueduct are uniquely photogenic.

- Sanmon Gate: A 22-meter triple gate where the bandit Ishikawa Goemon supposedly admired the view.
- Brick Aqueduct: A striking Meiji-era red-brick aqueduct running through the temple grounds.

History
Established in 1291 on Emperor Kameyama's retirement villa site. Rose to become the most prestigious Kyoto Zen institution.
