Overview

Kyoto's famous geisha district with preserved wooden machiya townhouses, ochaya (tea houses), and traditional restaurants.

Highlights

• Hanami-koji Street: Lantern-lit street lined with exclusive tea houses where geiko and maiko entertain.
• Shirakawa Canal: Picturesque willow-lined canal with stone bridges and atmospheric lighting.
• Geiko Sightings: Early evening offers the best chance to spot geiko and maiko.

History

Developed as an entertainment quarter serving Yasaka Shrine visitors. Approximately 80 geiko and 80 maiko still practice here.

Visitor Tips

• Respect: Do not chase or block geiko/maiko. Kyoto has strict photography rules in parts of Gion.
• Evening Walk: Most atmospheric between 5–8 PM.
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
