Overview
The Silver Pavilion — a Zen temple embodying wabi-sabi, beauty in imperfection. Despite its name, it was never covered in silver.
Highlights
- Sand Garden: The Ginshadan (Sea of Silver Sand) features the Kogetsudai cone sculpted from white sand.
- Moss Garden: Lush moss garden with winding paths, one of Kyoto's finest landscape designs.
- Philosopher's Path: Sits at the northern end of this famous canal-side walking path.
History
Built in 1482 by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. He died before the silver was applied, but the unadorned wood became a celebrated expression of restrained beauty.
