Overview
Miyajima (formally Itsukushima) is a sacred island in the Seto Inland Sea, considered one of Japan's three most scenic views. Home to the iconic floating torii gate, wild deer, ancient temples, and the primeval forests of Mount Misen.
Highlights
- Floating Torii Gate: The vermillion Itsukushima Shrine torii, appearing to float on the sea at high tide, is one of the most recognizable images in Japan.
- Wild Deer: Hundreds of tame sika deer roam freely through the town streets, beaches, and forest paths.
- Food Street: Omotesando shopping street is lined with stalls selling grilled oysters, momiji manju cakes, and local specialties.
History
Considered one of Japan's three most scenic views since the Edo period. The entire island was sacred — births and deaths were prohibited here to maintain its purity, a rule partially observed until the Meiji era.
