Overview
Daisho-in is the most important temple on Miyajima island, a major Shingon Buddhist monastery sprawling across the lower slopes of Mount Misen. Far less crowded than Itsukushima Shrine, it offers a richer spiritual experience.
Highlights
- 500 Rakan Statues: Hundreds of stone Buddha disciples line the pathways, each with a unique facial expression — legend says no two are alike.
- Prayer Wheels: Rows of spinning metal prayer wheels line the entrance stairway, each containing a complete Buddhist sutra.
- Mountain Gate: The Niomon gate guards the entrance with fierce wooden warrior statues.
History
Founded in 806 by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism, Daisho-in has been the spiritual center of Miyajima for over 1,200 years. The eternal flame on Mount Misen, lit by Kobo Daishi, has burned continuously since then.
