Overview
Sengokuhara is a peaceful highland plateau on the northern side of the Hakone caldera, home to world-class art museums, golden pampas grass fields, and secluded ryokan far from Hakone's busier lakeside areas.
Highlights
- Gallery Row: The Pola Museum of Art, Lalique Museum, and Hakone Venetian Glass Museum are all located in this district's forested highlands.
- Pampas Grass Fields: The famous susuki fields that turn golden in autumn, drawing photographers from across Japan.
- Secluded Ryokan: Several high-end traditional inns in this quieter district offer private onsen and refined kaiseki cuisine.
History
Sengokuhara ("field of a thousand stones") is named for the volcanic rocks scattered across this caldera plateau. It remained relatively undeveloped until the late 20th century when several major museums chose the forested highlands for their tranquil, nature-integrated settings.
