Overview
Moto-Hakone is a small lakeside village on the southeastern shore of Lake Ashi, serving as the historic heart of the Hakone lake area. The iconic lakeside torii gate, cedar-lined paths, and traditional atmosphere make it feel suspended in time.
Highlights
- Cedar Avenue: Towering cryptomeria trees line the lakeshore path between Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi, part of the old Tokaido highway.
- Torii Gate Views: The best spots to photograph Hakone Shrine's iconic lakeside torii gate are found along the Moto-Hakone waterfront.
- Lake Cruises: Both the pirate ship and smaller motorboats depart from Moto-Hakone port.
History
Moto-Hakone (literally "Original Hakone") was the lakeside settlement where the old Tokaido highway reached the shore. Travelers would rest here before the final push over the mountain pass. The village has preserved its traditional character.
