Overview
Kuzuryu Shrine Shingu (New Shrine) is a small, atmospheric Shinto shrine on the lakeshore beside Hakone Shrine, dedicated to the nine-headed dragon deity of Lake Ashi. It is revered as one of Japan's most powerful "power spots" for spiritual energy.
Highlights
- Dragon Deity: The shrine venerates the nine-headed dragon (kuzuryu) said to dwell in Lake Ashi — visitors come to pray for luck in love, wealth, and career.
- Lakeside Setting: The tiny shrine sits right at the water's edge, with the lake lapping almost at the offering box.
- Sacred Spring: A crystal-clear spring called Ryujin Sui emerges from the hillside near the shrine — visitors fill bottles with its purportedly blessed water.
History
According to legend, a fearsome nine-headed dragon terrorized Lake Ashi until the priest Mangan subdued it when founding Hakone Shrine in 757 AD. The dragon was converted to a protective deity, and this subsidiary shrine was established in its honor.
Visitor Tips
- Bring a Bottle: Fill a container at the sacred spring to take some of the blessed water home.
