Overview
The Hakone-Yumoto District is the bustling entry point to the Hakone region, where the Hakone Tozan Railway begins its mountain ascent. Traditional ryokan line the Hayakawa River, small shops sell local crafts and snacks, and free foot baths steam beside the roadside.
Highlights
- Riverside Ryokan: Traditional Japanese inns along the Hayakawa River and Sukumo River, many offering day-use bathing in their mineral-rich hot springs.
- Street Food: Freshly grilled senbei, steamed manju buns, and kamaboko fish cakes from shops along the main street.
- Free Foot Baths: Several ashiyu foot-soak stations let visitors rest their feet in natural hot-spring water at no charge.
History
Hakone-Yumoto has been a hot-spring retreat since at least 757 AD. Its strategic position at the entrance to the Hakone mountain pass made it an important rest station on the Tokaido highway during the Edo period.
