Overview
Hakone-en Aquarium is a compact lakeside aquarium within the larger Hakone-en resort complex on the eastern shore of Lake Ashi. It features both freshwater fish from the lake and surrounding rivers, and saltwater marine life.
Highlights
- Baikal Seals: A resident colony of rare Baikal freshwater seals — one of the few places outside Russia to see them.
- Lake Ashi Fish: A freshwater section showcasing the fish species that inhabit Lake Ashi and its tributary rivers.
- Touch Pool: An interactive pool where children can handle sea stars, sea cucumbers, and small marine creatures.
History
Established as part of the Prince Hotels' Hakone-en leisure complex, the aquarium has operated for decades on the shores of Lake Ashi. It serves as both an entertainment venue and a modest educational facility about the lake's ecosystem.
