Teatro alla Scala is the most prestigious opera house in the world. Since its inauguration in 1778, virtually every great opera composer and performer has graced its legendary stage.

History
Commissioned by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria after the previous Teatro Regio was destroyed by fire, La Scala was designed by Giuseppe Piermarini and opened with Salieri's Europa Riconosciuta in 1778. It premiered iconic works by Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, and Puccini.
Visitor Tips
- Last-Minute Tickets: Same-day gallery tickets are sometimes available at the box office 2.5 hours before curtain for around 15 EUR.
- Museum Visit: The museum allows a peek into the auditorium when rehearsals aren't in progress.
