History
Milan's navigli (navigable canals) were begun in 1179 and expanded over centuries to connect the city to Lakes Como and Maggiore for trade and to transport marble for the Duomo. Leonardo da Vinci improved the lock system around 1500 before most canals were covered in the 1930s.
