Overview
Italy's largest science and technology museum occupies a vast former Olivetan monastery, housing everything from Leonardo da Vinci's machine models to a full-size submarine and steam locomotives.
Highlights
- Leonardo Galleries: Over 170 historical models built from Leonardo's original codex drawings, including flying machines and hydraulic devices.
- Submarine Enrico Toti: Climb inside a Cold War-era Italian Navy submarine docked outside the museum.
- Space Section: Includes a fragment of lunar rock and a full-scale model of the Vega rocket launcher.
History
Founded in 1953 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's birth, the museum was established inside the 16th-century Monastery of San Vittore al Corpo. Its 50,000-square-meter campus has grown into one of Europe's most important technical museums.
