Overview
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is one of the world's oldest and most elegant shopping arcades, a soaring cruciform gallery of iron and glass connecting Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala.
Highlights
- The Glass Dome: A magnificent octagonal cupola rising 47 meters above the central crossing, decorated with mosaics of the four continents.
- The Bull Mosaic: A floor mosaic of the Turin bull where tradition dictates spinning three times on its private parts for good luck.
- Historic Shops: Prada's original store (founded 1913), the historic Biffi Caffe, and Camparino cocktail bar.
History
Designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni and inaugurated in 1877, the gallery was named after Italy's first king. Tragically, Mengoni fell to his death from scaffolding on the triumphal arch just days before the inauguration. The gallery became Milan's elegant drawing room, a symbol of the city's commercial ambition.
Visitor Tips
