Overview
Walking atop the Duomo di Milano's rooftop terraces places you among a forest of 135 intricately carved Gothic spires, with panoramic views stretching to the Alps on clear days.
Highlights
- The Spire Forest: Walk at eye level with hundreds of marble saints, gargoyles, and pinnacles, each uniquely carved over six centuries.
- The Madonnina: See Milan's gilded protectress up close from the highest accessible terrace.
- Alpine Panorama: On clear winter mornings, the snow-capped peaks of Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn are visible on the northern horizon.
History
The terraces have been accessible to visitors since the cathedral's completion. The marble surface, made of pinkish-white Candoglia marble quarried exclusively for the Duomo, was transported along a network of canals directly from Lake Maggiore.
Visitor Tips
- Stairs vs. Elevator: The stair ticket is cheaper; 250 steps lead to the first terrace. The elevator ticket costs more but saves significant effort.
- Sunset: Book a late-afternoon slot for golden-hour light on the marble spires.
- Duration: 45–60 minutes.
