Overview
The Arco della Pace is a grand neoclassical triumphal arch marking the northwest entrance to Parco Sempione, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
Highlights
- The Chariot of Peace: The bronze Sestiga della Pace crowning the arch, depicting a six-horse chariot driven by the figure of Peace.
- Bas-Reliefs: Detailed reliefs commemorating key events of Napoleon's campaigns and the Congress of Vienna.
- Evening Atmosphere: The arch and surrounding area come alive at sunset with street performers and aperitivo crowds.
History
Commissioned by Napoleon in 1807 to celebrate his victories, it was left unfinished after his fall. Austrian Emperor Franz I finally completed it in 1838, pivoting its dedication from Napoleon's triumphs to the peace established at the Congress of Vienna, hence reversing the chariot to face away from France.
Visitor Tips
- Golden Hour: Best photographed at sunset when the warm light illuminates the marble and the Alps may be visible behind.
- Aperitivo Spot: The bars around the arch are popular meeting points for Milanese evening drinks.
- Duration: 10–15 minutes.
