Jet d'Eau

Overview

The Jet d'Eau is Geneva's most iconic landmark, a towering water fountain on Lake Geneva that shoots water 140 metres into the air at 200 km/h. Visible from across the city, it has symbolised Geneva since 1891.

History

Originally a safety valve for a hydraulic power plant at La Coulouvrenière in 1886, the fountain was relocated to its current position in the lake in 1891 and gradually became a civic symbol.

Visitor Tips

• Free access: Walk the stone jetty to the base; expect to get wet on windy days.
• Best views: Pont du Mont-Blanc or the Quai Gustave-Ador promenade.
• Duration: 10–20 minutes.
