Overview
Joo Chiat and Katong form Singapore's Peranakan heartland — a heritage neighborhood of ornate pastel shophouses, Nonya restaurants, traditional kueh (cake) shops, and Straits Chinese culture.
Highlights
- Koon Seng Road: A row of exquisitely restored Peranakan shophouses in pastel colors — Singapore's most photographed residential street.
- Nonya Cuisine: Authentic Peranakan dishes — laksa, ayam buah keluak, kueh — at old-school restaurants.
- Katong Antique House: A private museum of Peranakan artefacts viewable by appointment.
History
Joo Chiat was named after Chew Joo Chiat, a Chinese landowner. The area became the center of Peranakan (Straits Chinese) culture, blending Chinese, Malay, Indian, and European influences.
