Overview
The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is Singapore's premier performing arts centre — twin durian-shaped domes on the Marina Bay waterfront housing a concert hall, theatre, and a programme of 3,000+ free performances per year.
Highlights
- Architecture: The twin-dome design with its sunshade cladding resembles a cut durian fruit.
- Free Performances: Over 3,000 free performances annually on outdoor stages and in the concourse.
- Rooftop Terrace: A lesser-known rooftop garden with beautiful harbour views.
History
Opened in 2002 after a 12-year planning and construction process, the Esplanade was designed by DP Architects and Michael Wilford. The nickname 'The Durian' was immediately adopted by locals.
