Wawel Royal Castle crowns a limestone hill above the Vistula, the seat of Polish kings for five centuries. Its Renaissance courtyard, Gothic cathedral, and royal apartments make Wawel Poland's most important historical and symbolic site.
A royal seat from the 11th century, Wawel was rebuilt in Renaissance style after a 1499 fire by Italian architects. It remained the royal residence until the capital moved to Warsaw in 1596.
