Overview
St. Mary's Basilica dominates the northeast corner of the Main Square with its asymmetric twin towers. Inside, Veit Stoss's 1489 altarpiece—the largest Gothic wooden altarpiece in Europe—unfolds in a blaze of polychrome and gold.
Highlights
- Veit Stoss altarpiece: A 13 × 11 metre masterwork carved from lime wood, depicting the life of the Virgin. It opens daily at 11:50.
- Polychrome interior: Star-vaulted ceilings painted deep blue with gold stars.
- Tower view: Climb the taller tower for an aerial view of the square.
History
The current Gothic church dates from the 14th century. The Stoss altarpiece was looted by the Nazis, recovered in 1946, and painstakingly restored.
