Rynek Underground Museum

Overview

Rynek Underground is a subterranean museum beneath the Main Market Square, using archaeological finds and multimedia to recreate medieval Kraków. Excavated market stalls, tollbooths, and ancient streets lie beneath the modern square.

• Medieval market: Original market infrastructure preserved 4 metres below the surface.
• Multimedia holograms: Ghostly projections recreate scenes of medieval trade.
• Archaeological finds: Coins, tools, pottery, and even a medieval latrine.

History

Excavated 2005–2010 during drainage works, the underground reveals layers of settlement from the 11th century onward.
