Overview
Kraków's Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) is the largest medieval square in Europe—200 × 200 metres of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture surrounding the Cloth Hall and St. Mary's Basilica.
Highlights
- Cloth Hall (Sukiennice): The arcaded Renaissance trading hall, now housing souvenir stalls below and a 19th-century Polish art gallery above.
- St. Mary's trumpet call (hejnał): A bugle call played hourly from the taller tower, breaking off mid-phrase to commemorate a 13th-century Tatar attack.
- Café culture: The square's ground-floor arcades are filled with cafés and restaurants.
History
Laid out in 1257. The square has been Kraków's commercial and social centre for over 750 years.
Visitor Tips
- Hejnał: Listen for the trumpet call on the hour—the abrupt stop is deliberate.
- Evening atmosphere: The square is magical when lit at night.
- Duration: 20–40 minutes.
