Overview
The Seoul Fortress Wall (Hanyangdoseong) is an 18.6-km walking trail following the remains of the 14th-century city wall that once encircled the Joseon capital, connecting four mountain peaks with panoramic Seoul views.
Highlights
- Mountain Peak Views: The wall crosses Bugaksan, Naksan, Inwangsan, and Namsan, each offering unique city panoramas.
- 600-Year-Old Wall: Sections from different eras show evolving construction techniques across the Joseon period.
- Inwangsan Section: The most scenic stretch, crossing a shamanist site with Seoul views.
History
Built in 1396 by King Taejo using conscripted labor from across Korea, the wall enclosed the new capital. Much was demolished during Japanese rule and Korean War reconstruction, but extensive restoration is ongoing.
Visitor Tips
- Section by Section: The wall is divided into 6 sections — most people walk 1–2 sections. The Naksan section is the easiest.
- Bugaksan Access: Requires ID check due to proximity to the presidential residence.
- Duration: 2–4 hours.
