Overview
The DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is the 4-km-wide heavily fortified buffer zone separating North and South Korea — the world's most militarized border, accessible only through organized tours from Seoul.
Highlights
- Joint Security Area (JSA): The iconic blue UN buildings at Panmunjom where you can technically step into North Korea.
- Third Tunnel of Aggression: A North Korean infiltration tunnel discovered in 1978, descending 73 meters underground.
- Dora Observatory: A hilltop viewpoint looking into North Korean territory and the propaganda village of Kijŏng-dong.
History
Established by the 1953 armistice that paused (but never ended) the Korean War, the DMZ stretches 250 km across the peninsula. Paradoxically, the untouched buffer zone has become a wildlife sanctuary.
