Overview
Changdeokgung is a UNESCO World Heritage palace considered the most beautiful of Seoul's five palaces, with a 'Secret Garden' (Huwon) of centuries-old trees, pavilions, and lotus ponds.
Highlights
- Secret Garden (Huwon): A 78-acre rear garden with ancient trees, scenic ponds, and hidden pavilions — accessible only by guided tour.
- Injeongjeon Hall: The main throne hall with a beautifully painted ceiling and dragon throne.
- Nakseonjae Complex: An elegantly restrained 19th-century compound where the last Korean imperial family lived until 1989.
History
Built in 1405 as a secondary palace, Changdeokgung became the primary royal residence and served as the seat of government for 270 years. Its design harmonizes with the natural landscape rather than imposing symmetry.
