Overview
Tsutenkaku is Shinsekai's beloved retro tower — a 103-meter observation tower modeled on the Eiffel Tower, crowned with a Hitachi neon sign and home to the golden Billiken lucky statue.
Highlights
- Billiken Statue: The lucky god of 'things as they should be' — rub his feet for good luck.
- Retro Charm: The tower's 1950s aesthetic perfectly matches the Shinsekai neighborhood below.
- Neon Crown: The tower's neon color changes to indicate tomorrow's weather forecast.
History
The original Tsutenkaku was built in 1912 as part of Shinsekai's development. After collapse and wartime demolition, the current tower was rebuilt in 1956 by public subscription.
