Overview
Fushimi Inari Taisha is Japan's most iconic Shinto shrine, famous for its seemingly endless tunnel of 10,000 vermillion torii gates winding 4 km up Mount Inari — easily accessible from Osaka by train.
Highlights
- Senbon Torii: Thousands of densely packed vermillion torii gates creating a hypnotic tunnel effect.
- Summit Hike: The full loop to the summit takes about 2 hours with shrines and viewpoints along the way.
- Fox Statues: Carved stone foxes (kitsune) guard the shrine — foxes are Inari's messengers.
History
Founded in 711 AD, the shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, sake, and prosperity. The torii gates are donated by individuals and businesses for good fortune — each gate bears the donor's name.
